The Amatuer 2025 Review

Rated: M

My Rating: 7.5/10

I went into The Amateur not entirely sure what to expect. It's not your typical action-packed spy flick with explosive set pieces and high-speed chases. Instead, it's a more subdued, cerebral thriller that relies on tension and intellect rather than brute force.

Rami Malek stars as Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer whose life is upended when his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Frustrated by the agency's inaction, he takes matters into his own hands, using his analytical skills to track down those responsible. Malek delivers a compelling performance, conveying a range of emotions through subtle expressions and body language. His portrayal of Heller is both vulnerable and determined, making it easy to empathise with his character's journey.

The film's strength lies in its emphasis on strategy and psychological warfare over physical confrontations. Heller's methods are calculated and precise, reflecting his background in cryptography. This approach sets The Amateur apart from other entries in the genre, offering a refreshing take on the spy narrative.

While the pacing may feel slow to some, I found it allowed for a deeper exploration of the characters and their motivations. The supporting cast, including Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, provide solid performances that complement Malek's lead.

Overall, The Amateur is a thoughtful and engaging film that rewards patient viewers. It's a testament to the power of intellect and determination in the face of adversity. That’s why I rate this film a 7.5/10
