Summary

" It honours the Warrens’ journey with a respectful nod and a final chill down the spine."

The Conjuring: Last Rites knows exactly how to scare its audience. The jumpscares are placed with precision rather than thrown in for cheap shock value. It’s chilling in every sense, especially knowing that the haunting it portrays is inspired by the real-life Smurl family case. This is the final film in the Conjuring Universe, based on what was the last case the Warrens ever investigated, the one that sent them into permanent retirement.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga slip back into their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren as if no time has passed. Their chemistry is still the beating heart of the series, and their final performance together gives this farewell emotional heft. Fans of the franchise will recognise their rhythm and trust it carries them through some genuinely terrifying moments

Mia Tomlinson plays Judy Warren, the Warrens’ only daughter, in her most prominent screen role yet. Her presence grounds the story further with a sense of legacy and familial vulnerability. This installment also hints at what may come next, even as it closes this chapter.

Set in 1986 and rooted in the Smurl haunting, the film is tightly anchored in that terrifying space between dark truth and supernatural dread. The Smurl family experienced unrelenting torment: whispers in empty rooms, Toys moving on their own, Birthday candles being blown out on their own and more. It is one of the most haunting investigations the Warrens ever undertook.

The cinematography has never looked so crisp. The dark tones, nostalgic set pieces and moody lighting come together to create a deeply immersive atmosphere. For me it was the first time I truly noticed how beautiful it all is.

The score deepens the dread while leaving space for the emotional farewells. There is a weightiness to the music that enhances the terror but also reminds you of the fragility of those who face it.

The film weaves a satisfying and heartbreaking finale. It revisits themes of faith, family and legacy with unwavering seriousness, delivering closure to a universe we've followed for over a decade. It honours the Warrens’ journey with a respectful nod and a final chill down the spine.
